Headington United had grown to become the largest club in the city, and as such, the club was renamed 'Oxford United'.

The team went on to win the 1960/61 Southern League title. However, at the time, promotion to the Football League was not automatic. Instead, the Southern League champions had to apply for entry, while the bottom four clubs in the Football League sought re-election to retain their place.

Oxford United's application was unsuccessful, with Exeter City, Barrow AFC, Hartlepools United, and Chester City all being re-elected to remain in Division Four.

Kit Manufacturer

The early 1960s marked the first time I can confidently identify who manufactured Oxford United's kits.

Bukta, a company based in Stockport, supplied the team’s gear. Bukta was a prominent brand during this era, also outfitting the England national team, who continued to wear Bukta kits up until their iconic 1966 World Cup victory.

Club Crest

A fan competition was held to design a new badge for Oxford United, the winning entry was by Mr. SEV Clarke of Headington.

It featured a red ox crossing a ford, just like the old Headington United badge, there was also a subtle 'H' in the background as a nod to the club's former Headington name.

Home Kit

Long
sleeves

In those days, most football clubs wore similar kits with few distinguishing features.

Oxford United embraced the fashionable 'continental style,' with a contrasting v-neck and cuffs.

Short-sleeved shirts were worn for the warmer months and long-sleeved versions during the winter.

While the shirt colour was often described as gold or old-gold, Bukta's catalogues officially listed it as amber.

Away Kit

Long
sleeves

The away kit followed the same design template as the home kit, but in white.

Goalkeeper Jersey

The keepers jerseys appeared to be knitted wool jumpers.
